Meet CURB

Caribbean Umbrella Body for Restorative Behaviour (CURB) is the first and only Caribbean network of non-profit associations working to assist and support criminal offenders, ex-offenders, crime survivors, correctional officers and their respective families.

CURB is also involved in bringing to fruition the Turning of the Hearts (TOTH) Programme -  a restorative model of aftercare which provides effective support for crime survivors, prisoners and ex-prisoners and their families.

In comparison with other strategies utilised worldwide for offender re-integration, mentoring offenders has been proven successful.

Studies in the UK  and the USA have shown the positive impact that getting a mentor involved with an offender can have, in terms of reduction of offending, lowering of risk, and improving pro-social attitudes and behaviour.

CURB is therefore committed to encouraging the use of mentors with young and adult offenders as a means of helping to reduce offending. As part of this initiative, we provide a comprehensive mentoring programme for young offenders at the Youth Training Centre.

This Being Somebody programme commences while the young persons are detained and continues “beyond the gate” for a period of two years to guarantee their safe reintegration into free society.

Meet Anointed Sons International

Anointed Sons International (ASI) collaborates with other organizations and institutions within our communities to establish a network of Mentors and resources for youth, primarily young men between the ages of eleven and nineteen.

This will be done through the use of Spiritual, psychological and academic guidance thereby contributing to the general enhancing of the lives of our youth and by extension our society.

The executive of ASI is led by Ms. Arlene Hamblin and comprises of directors who oversee the daily operation of the organization and its projects. This team comprises of persons trained in the areas such as ministerial studies, psychology, accounting, art, music, medical, education and Human resource management. It is a group uniquely selected by God for his purpose.

ASI Worshippers is an area of ASI which God has called to the fore. It has been established as an integral part of the organization’s vehicle to reach into the society. ASI Worshippers primarily focuses on the music Ministry. With a strong dance base, it seeks to impact upon the youth the importance of the use of music and movement for Worship in our everyday lives.

This aspect of the vision in supported by the scripture Romans 12:1 Therefore I urge you brothers in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-this is your spiritual act of Worship.

ASI has successfully partnered with the Youth Training Centre (at the launch of ASI, lads from the institution ministered in dance as the first ASI Worshippers). We will continue our partnership with the institution as we initiate training programs which will include first aid/CPR, Art, dance as well as song and poetry writing.

Meet The Heroes Foundation

The Heroes Foundation has been the proud host organization for the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) programme in Trinidad and Tobago since August 2004.

BBBS began in 1904 in the United States of America, introducing a unique style of one-to-one mentoring of children and adolescents. In 1998, an organization called Big Brothers Big Sisters International was established to assist interested countries in setting up their own programmes.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Trinidad and Tobago (BBBSTT) is one of the latest recipients of their support.

The BBBS programme is designed to give young people the opportunity to interact in a positive way with an adult outside of their family or regular circle. BBBS pairs an adult volunteer, known as a “Big”, in a one-to-one relationship with a child or adolescent, called a “Little”, of the same gender.

The Big spends a minimum of two (2) hours each week with the Little, participating in a wide range of activities, from important things like helping with homework to simple things like window-shopping, playing a board game or just hanging out.

Volunteers, Parents and Guardians are given support and training throughout the term of the Match by the foundation and the BBBS Case Officer(s).

Meet The Mentoring Centre

The Mentoring Centre of Trinidad and Tobago (MCTT) is the brain child of Ms. Joanne Spence – an experienced mediator, social worker and mentor trainer.

MCTT is a non-government organization whose two-tiered mission is improving the quality and effectiveness of mentoring programs and providing direct service mentoring models to transform the lives of youths into productive citizens.

Our services includes program design and implementation, training and capacity building workshops and program evaluation. For further information, please contact us at mentorc6@gmail.com.

Committee formed to promote Mentoring in the Caribbean

In November, 2009 a group of individuals representing non-profit organisations engaged in mentoring young persons in Trinidad and Tobago began to hold discussions towards having an annual observance of Mentoring Month in the Caribbean.

The organisations represented on this new committee include The Mentoring Centre of Trinidad and Tobago, The Heroes Foundation (host of Big Brother Big Sister Trinidad and Tobago), Anointed Sons International and Caribbean Umbrella Body for Restorative Behaviour (CURB).

A decision was taken to host Caribbean Mentoring Month (CMM) in the month of April every year commencing in 2010.
